S.4369 Stewart-Cousins – Cal. 1207
On Assembly Education Committee Agenda 6/3/15
The Conference of Big 5 School Districts, on behalf of the Yonkers Public Schools, strongly supports S.4369 (Stewart-Cousins)/ A.6333 (Pretlow) which would authorize the Yonkers Public Schools to require all five year-old children to attend kindergarten instruction with certain exceptions.
Yonkers currently provides a full day kindergarten program. Numerous studies have documented the relationship between student participation in quality early childhood education programs and future educational success. Unfortunately, many children enter first grade unprepared due to poor attendance.
This measure would address this issue by authorizing the Yonkers Public Schools to require all five year-old children to attend kindergarten instruction. Exceptions are provided for parents who choose not to enroll their child until the following September and for students enrolled in non-public schools or receiving home instruction. A similar provision was adopted for the Syracuse City School District more than 25 years ago and recently for Buffalo, New York City, Rochester and Utica.
The Conference of Big 5 School Districts urges your approval of S.4369 (Stewart-Cousins)/A.6333 (Pretlow).
